I sit and watch you gasp for breath, for life
Your sunken eyes reflective of your pain
I know you’ve fought to stay with me so long
Your time on earth is coming to an end
I hold your hand, so frail, so weak, so thin
As I recall the memories we made
We had hard times, but we had lots of fun
I don’t think I can live without you, dear
We met when we were teenagers, so young
Just seventeen, they said it would not last
Now fifty years of happiness will end
When very soon you will no longer be
I hold you close and see your pretty face
The ravages of cancer left their mark
Although each day I’ve asked for miracles
I realise now that I must let you go
Fly free, dear heart, fly free to God above
Your presence and your love pervades my soul
I know we’ll meet once more at heaven’s gate
Until that day I’ll live with memories
Your fingers squeeze my hand to bid farewell
As slowly you let out a final sigh
Your face relaxes, all your lines now gone
Your spirit stays and helps me through the dark

Contest Entry: Blank Verse
Blank verse is verse written in iambic pentameter (da DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM) without rhyme. Shakespeare often used it. For this contest, no end rhymes, either true or proximate, are allowed. No internal or true rhymes are allowed in the same line (they may be in consecutive lines.)
True rhymes--ones in which the ending vowel and consonantal sounds are the same. (e.g. fate/late)
Proximate rhymes--ones in which the ending vowel sound is the same, but the ending consonantal sounds differ.
(e.g. time/nine)
End rhymes--rhyming words at the end of a line.
