Oh, the toil of growing so much food
Fighting the insects with bug spray feud
Tenderly nurturing, each fair row
Hanging up Boogie Man, my scarecrow
Weeding and watering every day
Gathering the harvest come what may
But wait, what’s this in my garden spot?
A groundhog with such an evil plot
He’s munching my lettuce, bit by bit
Why, the nerve of that little nit wit
Boogie Man stands there with his dumb stare
While the groundhog eats without a care
What’s this I see, more critters lurk near
A rabbit with friends, plus a few deer
Now, crows flock in to feast on the corn
I’m sure they’re out to show me their scorn
My scarecrow’s worthless without a doubt
As they munch away each little sprout
Good Golly Miss Molly, that won’t do
I’m feeding the whole neighborhood zoo
It’s time to take the matter in hand
I feel like Custer at the last stand
Shotgun on target I take my aim
The garden is mine, I stake my claim
Kaboom goes the shot to their despair
Lucky for them I missed by a hair
The critters run and scatter about
As I yell out and give them a shout
Stay out of my garden or you’ll pay
My shotgun you’ll face, both night and day
Then, they all looked back with hurtful pride
It made me feel bad, I almost cried
Poor lil’ critters just wanted some food
Did I have to go and be so rude?
Gosh darn it all, now what should I do?
I thought and thought and suddenly knew
I’d fence half my garden just for me
And the other half, I’d let grow free
With the critters happy now I know
I can sit and watch my garden grow
