Life in an Hourglass by Richard E. Parkison Jr
Rhyming Poetry Contest contest entry

Like sands in a hourglass,
A clock ticking way too fast.
Today, tomorrow, forever,
A life taken way too fast.

The seconds, the minutes,
The days, the months, and years.
Feelings of anger and regret,
Heaviness, numbness and tears.

The why's, the what-ifs,
This should haves and could have beens.
The depression, grief and shame,
When will it come to an end.

The love, that smile,
The encouragement to "Just do good".
The impression you left on so many,
To do the things we should.

The memories, music and laughter,
Are nothing one can compare.
As we reminisce on day's past,
And the times we were privileged to share.

The songs you wrote,
The little life stories you told.
Will be spoken upon to many,
Well past days of old.

Like the shadow on a sundial,
Your life faded way too fast.
The pain has been felt by many,
Knowing your time has passed.

And although we struggle to break free,
From this darkness our hearts so abide.
Just know we find strength and comfort,
Knowing one day,
We will see you on the other side.
