Chisel by Bill Schott

The technician held a chisel against Dave's forehead and was about to hit it with a sledge hammer.

"Have you done this before?" asked Dave.

"Twenty-four times today," answered the hammer-holder.

"Oh, okay. I am just a bit nervous."

The hammer dropped and the chisel penetrated Dave’s skull; he died immediately.

“Damn!  I was certain that the procedure would work for him.”

Looking over his shoulder and clearing his throat, the technician yelled to the orderlies who stood together by the door.

“Listen, fellows -- I am going to need a wider chisel, a heavier hammer, and another couple dozen volunteers.”
