Hanging in the balance - Be in a precarious condition or in a state of suspense. In this instance, will the laundry dry on such a dismal day? Furthermore, will the laundry need washing again after the starlings have visited in their masses?!

Photo taken from my bedroom window this morning. I count twenty starlings on the picture... off shot, there was at least double that amount perched on the garage roof!
