The swirling thoughts within my head
refuse to let me go to bed.
"Write me!" "Write me!" They call in turn.

My eyes are tired; they're red; they burn.
"Oh, please, " I cry, "leave me alone."

I put a whimper in my tone,
"I need my rest. Come back at dawn."

I crawl in bed, but not for long.

They spin, and shake, and churn, and seethe.
"We want to live; we want to breathe."
They vow to haunt and then they plead,
"You must arise and fill our need."

These thoughts refuse to go away.
What wicked little games they play
until I rise and find a pen.

I jot them down, and only then
they know they're safe.
                                      Away they creep.

Now...
           Finally...
                        They let me sleep.

Author Notes
Did I read too many Why I Write essays late at night?
