A polar bear cub! A polar bear cub!
I really want a polar bear cub!
He's playful and fluffy and rolls like a log,
and bear hugs are best from a bear, not a dog.
He'd keep me all warm at night, next to his fur,
and I'd always feed him, Mom, honest—for sure.
Oh, Mom, may I please have a polar bear cub?
Then Mom said, "If we get a polar bear cub,
the mother bear'd have to come, too.
But Dad and I just bought a new waterbed,
and if those bears' claws punctured the bedspread
I'm sure Dad would yell a lot, then shoot 'em dead."
So I guess we're not getting a polar bear cub.
A capuchin monkey! A capuchin monkey!
I'd really love a capuchin monkey!
He'd sit on my shoulder and chatter away,
and all of the kids would come over to play.
It'd be like a circus, Mom, don't you agree?
So would you buy me that cute capuchin monkey?
Then Mom said, "If we got a capuchin monkey,
your father would groan at the sight
of him swinging on top of our hall chandelier.
No matter how cute he is, this time it's clear
Dad would go mad with a monkey so near."
So I guess we're not getting a capuchin monkey.
A zebra for sale! A zebra for sale!
Oh, Mom, would you ask if that zebra's for sale?
From here I can tell that he's just the right size
to ride on him bareback. And look at his eyes!
I'd teach him some tricks like a leap through the air,
to fetch the newspaper or my underwear.
So would you please get me a zebra?
Then Mom said, "If we got a zebra for you,
I'd worry how we'd clean his hide.
We could use the bathtub—now that's pretty wide,
but what if his stripes were scrubbed off when inside?"
So I guess we're not getting a zebra.
I really should tell you, in case you believed
that all of this shopping would make me give up.
Well, this time, I'm sure that my mom will say yes
since the animal I want is simply...a pup!
