a thousand lone nights waiting in our meeting place knowing you won't come — where bleeding-heart flowers bloom and the last spix macaw cries     Recognized Author Notes The last Spix Macaw lived from 2009 to 2019 in Brazil which was the bird's home. It's extinct since 2019. The bleeding heart flowers are native to China, Korea, and Japan. Tanka is one of the oldest types of Japanese poetry. It begun in the Emperial Court, where lovers exchanged a tanka after a night of lovemaking.
