When talking has failed
and action’s required,
they’ll load and deliver
with trained weapons fired.
In battle our heroes
are blooded with pride.
Staunch and with valor
they stand side-by-side.
On shoulders weighed down
with heavy demands,
our soldiers obey
what their nation commands;
fighting hard in a crisis,
facing ordeals,
with courage in service
to our high ideals.
For honor of country
in freedom’s defense,
so often the personal
cost is immense.
To fight for our country,
to wear a dog-tag,
ever loyal and strong —
we salute the flag.

Author Notes
Author Note:
I live in New Zealand, a country whose military personnel are known more for peace-keeping and humanitarian commitments rather than armed force. I imagined I was American while writing this poem.
I personally do not know any serving military personnel. My father was in the Australian army during World War 2 and both grandfathers served in World War 1.
In Australia and New Zealand we have a proud tradition of honouring our ANZAC spirit (Australia New Zealand Army Corps), forged during World War 1 battles and continuing since then.
