A story about Little Miss Bossy by Wendy G
Children's Poem writing prompt entry

Now, Mary likes to be the boss
For others she don't care - their loss ...
She always wins the games they play
Or she will sulk throughout the day.

Yes, she's the one who sets the rules
But the other kids ... well, they're not fools ...
They say, "Your rules? They are not fair!"
But Mary says "Well, I don't care!"

"If it's with me you want to play
Everything must go my way!"
Of course the others want some fun
But her words irk each and ev'ry one.

"Should we make a different game?"
"Will that help, or just be the same?"
"Mary, let's enjoy some fun today
It's time we learned a better way!"

"Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose,
But we must never get the blues
What matters most is that we share
Make happy times, and show we care."

"Please Mary, will you play with us,
Enjoy ourselves, without this fuss?
We want to skip, and run, and play …
And enjoy ourselves outside today!

We do not need these rules, you see -
Let's be ourselves, you're you … I'm me!
We only need one special guide …
Show love and care when side by side.

You're no better and you're no worse,
So don't get angry, sad, or terse …
It's not the win which counts, you see
It's playing together in harmony."

Mary sat quiet then, for a while –
And this was not her usual style …
"Think of a game – and you can choose!
And I won't mind if I win or lose!"

Mary was so happy all that day ...
The children had such fun at play
From early morn till sun had set
This was by far their best day yet!

Author Notes
This is for children from about four years old to ten years old.

I envisage it illustrated with cartoon-type figures with appropriate facial expressions.

For parents: A reminder to children that winning isn't everything.
Some children get upset or cry if they lose. However, knowing how to lose graciously is important for character development.
Learning to be inclusive is also important. As in all of life, winning isn't everything.
It's how you play the game that counts, and relationships matter most of all.
