Can you see what I see?

Life Lessons poetry contest entry

What do you see when you look at this picture?
Do you see the dilapidated, decaying remnants of an old house?
Wanna know what I see?
I see a window into my childhood,
I see the bedroom of my Mother, who was taken way too soon,
I see the back wall of that bedroom where a poster of Jesus watched over us,
I see the tin roof where the sound of the rain was like heaven,
I see the back porch that's no longer there,
I see the kitchen where my grandmother cooked on a wood stove,
I see the chickens running around in the backyard,
I see the goat that chased and terrorized me, and ate my uncle's homework,
I see the pig named Peewee that my brother raised and would not eat,
I see the fig tree that used to be there behind the house,
I see the two giant Chinaberry trees that we climbed, which stood like sentries in the front yard,
I see my Mother watering the flowers at late evening and me running through the spray,
I see me once again as a boy without a care in the world,
I see a childhood full of imagination, wonder and amazement,
I see beauty that might be invisible to others,
I see indescribable joy,
I see love.

Don't discard the first look in haste.
There's always more to see.
Look for the more in everything.
Who knows?...you may catch a glimpse of life.
