In thinking back
On the last 66 years
Of my life's journeys
Around the sun.
I realize that I have done a lot
I have seen a lot, been a lot
I have done a lot, lived a lot
I have loved a lot.
I have been to all 50 states
I have been to 55 foreign lands
I hitched hike across the USA
When I was young and foolish.
I cheated death
Over twenty two times
In my life
I had 18 operations along the way
I have learned three languages.
I must have read
Over 10,000 books and stories
Seen over 10,000 movies and tv shows.
I graduated from college
Graduate school too
Served as a diplomat despite suffering
From a life-long learning disability.
I served my country
As a diplomat
Working in over ten countries
Making the world a better place.
I was a politician of sorts
Although the highest position
I ever held was student body president
In high school, and student senator in college.
I was a champion debater
I was a published poet
Short story writer
And lately a blogger.
I had so many friends
Over the years
From every race and place.
Every religion and creed.
But my greatest accomplishment
The one I am most proud of
Is that I met and married
The woman of my dreams.
And if I had not met her
None of my accomplishments
Would have amounted to anything,
Without her love by my side.
And so I close this poem
Of self-reflection with this.
I followed my dreams
And that has made all the difference.
