The beauty of Scotland
Glen Coe Scotland by Aussie
Love Poem Poetry Contest contest entry

As the sun rose over bracken mountains
Amongst heather the stags bellowed
Heads down, antlers clashed
Spotted red hind watched together

T'was the season for the mating
Upon the mountains of Glen Coe
Ancient and beautiful, kissing sky
Mountains bathed in sunlight

Much blood spilt over the ages
Wild Scots and English men
Still the beauty of Glen Coe
Grows more beautiful

No more men fighting
Only the stags rutting
Sounds heard on lonely crags
Among the granite rocks

A tough place to raise young
Hundreds of years they are free
Only tourists with large guns
And Gilly's show the deer

Even the Queen shot a stag
Proud of antlers for her wall
Beautiful deer have a right
To bask in freedom here

Shooting magnificent creatures
Just because you can
Brings no love of nature
Only selfishness of man

Author Notes
Contest entry for Love Poem: I have used the painting by Landseer. Nature is beautiful in all it's forms. I have watched the red deer from the road, running through Glen Coe, Scotland. Stately and eerie. Thanks for reading. The antlers of stags can be one metre across. The Queen shot a stag who's antlers were 27 inches across. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Hunting for pride is selfish. My love for Scotland runs deep.
