The last rays of the summer sun were disappearing below the horizon as Charlie boarded the train. He couldn’t help but feel nervous as his stomach continuously turned over. Hearing the call for "All Aboard" Charlie didn’t know when, or if, he would be back and it took all his resolve not to jump off and give his beloved wife, Maria, the big hug that he knew they both needed.  He knew that what he was doing was right; for himself, for his  family and for the country in which they lived. Charlie leaned out the train window and blew Maria a soft goodbye kiss, silently whispering, “I Love You.”

Maria stood on the station platform, her heart a roller coaster of fear and pride. Theirs had been a whirlwind romance; she had fallen for his charms right away, and him for her beauty. Six weeks later he was down on one knee asking for her hand in marriage and now he was off serving his country. She just prayed he would be careful over there. People milled around her in varying stages of emotion and Maria was finding it hard to contain hers. Cradling the growing life inside her Maria returned Charlie’s blown kiss. At least he’d have a surprise to come home to.

Maria could feel the tears well up as memories came flooding back. Looking at her grandson in full dress uniform she had the same feelings as years ago. He was so much like his grandfather, the same strong jawline, the same twinkle in his eye and the same sense of intense patriotism. Maria knew he would be wearing Charlie’s service medal; she had pinned it on him earlier that day: a reminder of a young soldier who never got to meet his baby daughter.
