Our day started off, oh, so normal,
excited for our road trip that day.
Lot's of snacks packed in a cooler,
in case hunger hit on the way.
The scenery, it was quite lovely,
Lake Superior shone in the sun.
Woods all around, so dark and so deep,
with a promise ahead of some fun.
Off to Bayfield's Apple Festival,
that Wisconsin holds every Fall.
Hoping to score some sweet apple treats,
and to take in the sights of it all.
My husband called, halfway to Bayfield,
said, "Be cautious, that deer might be lurking."
and "We might find out we're in trouble,
if attention we pay, might be shirking."
Beyoncé was singing about "bills, bills, bills",
all of us in the car full of cheer.
When all of a sudden from out of nowhere,
a blur sped by, shaped like a deer.
Sadly, not fast enough to make it by,
and neither did our car in the end.
The deer dashed into the deep, dark woods,
how were we? Now that all depends.
Shaken and dazed, we sat frozen there,
my daughter, she started to cry.
It was her car, she couldn't believe it,
and despondent the victim might die.
The fate of that deer was uncertain,
had we listened to warning foretold,
perhaps we would then be in Bayfield,
instead of seeing tragedy unfold.
We never made it to Bayfield,
were driven back home by a friend.
The car was a loss, it was totaled,
the red Kia had met its last end.
No sweet apple treats did we savor,
no sights to enjoy at the Fest,
just the broken dreams of a road trip,
that didn't turn out quite the best.
