Hush, hear the pin drop?
Then, BANG!
The resounding blast
of the starter's pistol
reverberates around the
lush green spaces
and the heavily trafficked infield.

Then a crescendo of sounds,
shrill cheers, which bounce off
every eardrum, like a clap of
thunder rumbling in wave after wave,
as the runners complete the first
five hundred meters.

Ten runners, each one the top
of the heap, having survived meet
after meet, pouring it on, as though
flipping a switch to a tank of nitro
exploding, thrusting two runners
ahead.

Sucking in every minuscule breath
of oxygen-rich air,
the two runners pull
further and further away
from the field.

The tape in sight,
every muscle is taut
the runners' last gasps
burn like a hand in a flame.

The crowd is standing, pounding,
pleading, simply awash with great
zeal...

But, then it's over....
you are in second place.
Nothing more to say!

But! Train, train and
train some more!
When you think you have nothing
left to give, give it some more!

Get back in the race!
It is the only way to win!
A first place finish
is just a matter of when!

Then they, too, will
remember your name...
when you place first!
