A Slight Underestimation

The worm is caught by early birds.
I woke up with first light
to put to test and prove those words
and find out if they’re right.

Before too long I found a place,
maneuver room with lots of space
established as my hunting base.
Imagine my delight.

Was that a wiggle over there?
Is this the time to make a bite?
Now for the swoop, no time to spare,
I’ll catch him in mid-flight.

But wait a minute!  Something’s wrong.
He must be fat and very long.
I didn’t think he’d be this strong.
It’s turned out quite a fight.

I pull, he pulls. Oh, mercy me,
I’m hanging on despite
it’s harder than I thought 'twould be.
My hunger’s turned to fright.

He yanked me in the hole with him.
My future’s looking very grim.
The chance of winning’s very dim.
I failed in oversight.

Author Notes
I did a slight modification and went with abab. The Pantygynt: The first four lines of each cycle alternate iambic tetrameter/trimeter and are rhymed abcb. The next three lines are all iambic tetrameter in monorhyme ddd. A final line in iambic trimeter rhymed b.
