Steps taken not always straight and narrow

Straight and Narrow Path

by JLR

Someone asked, "Did you get a roadmap
for that Earthbound journey
you called life, old chap?"

I said, "I heard a preacher spew the words
stay on the straight and narrow path
and so, I just set off... listening to birds."

While young, so many walks I had taken,
long past days of sucking my thumb,
always taking the narrow path, for I was not yet brazen.

As time ticked along, the straight and narrow
became a winding patch of wrong after wrongs
until I came face to face with a Barrow.

It was the time, if ever it would be
that I get back on the straight and narrow
these two paths the preacher told to me.

Now, I am back on course with roadmap in hand
with a snappy little fellow over my shoulder
who once in a while says, "That pathway is banned."
