Strange goings on at the graveyard

The Graveyard

by Roxanna Andrews

Walking past the cemetery on a cool fall night,
I saw something I would consider a very strange sight.

Around an open grave stood five creatures dressed in black,
In gnarled, claw like hands they each held a sack.

I crept behind a headstone, and peeked over the top,
I watched as they raised the sacks and each creature hopped.

A twirl to the left was next, and then a shuffle to the right,
then a howl went up so loud, it gave me quite a fright.

From the ground there came a rumble, it started out low.
The grave gave off an eerie light and the rumble it did grow.

Those gathered, one by one, cast in their burlap bags,
and up from the grave came a creature dressed in rags.

It's skin was green, it's eyes black pools, hair only jagged bangs.
From it's mouth, the light glinted off two sharp fangs.

I gasped aloud not meaning to, all eyes turned toward me,
My fright kept me frozen, but my mind screamed, "You must flee!"

My feet, I made them move and finally they took flight.
I glanced behind me once, to see a ghastly sight.

The ghouls seemed to float as they followed close behind,
I knew if they should catch me, they would not be kind.

I tried to scream several times, but no sound did emanate,
As I ran it dawned upon me what was the present date.

October Thirty-First it was, the most scariest of times,
I ran past the old church and heard the midnight chimes.

I turned a corner sharply, fell and banged my head.
Dazed I looked about me and found I'd fallen out of bed.

A dream was all that it had been, relief flooded me,
I climbed back beneath my covers but neglected to see,

Six pair of eyes staring, twelve gnarled hands reaching.
The house empty but for me and no one heard my screeching.
