This work has reached the exceptional level
tribute to my friend who died

My Friend

by Sharon Feldt

My friend died today.
She was brave and funny
And gave advice that was well intentioned
But almost always wrong.

She knew everything and nothing
about medicine, motors and cameras,
insurance, carpentry and flowers,
And she made you believe.

She loved flowers and hummingbirds
Pistols and Chevrolets
Garage sales on Saturdays
And always church on Sundays.

My friend died today.
I will miss her burst of laughter
Her fascination with Mickey Mouse watches
And her unabated love for her dog.

She was a helper, an explorer and a hunter
Never a meal she couldn't cook
A contest she didn't enter
Or a debate she passed up.

My friend died today.
There is a gaping hole in my world
And I imagine, as well,
In the hearts of all who knew her.

A space unfilled at the fairgrounds.
No more Special Chicken Stew
From the big iron kettle she filled each year.
First prize will go unclaimed.

I will mourn her absence at my kitchen counter
For morning coffee and chatter
Of gossip and news from the town
And no baklava to share at Christmas.

My cats will miss her too
And the treats and playful feather-toys
She brought at visits
Always cooing and ruffling their fur.

The hummingbirds have gone
And flowers outside are wilting.
My friend died today.
My friend died today.
