In North America a "BA" is considered to be a word. However, there is support for this style worldwide. The following sentence appears in the University of Oxford Style Guide:

"Do not include a BA for Oxford/Cambridge graduates if they also have the MA."

LearnGrammar.NET differentiates between words for degrees, like BA (Bachelor of Arts) and LLB (Bachelor of Laws) when choosing the preceding indefinite article of "a" versus "an".

The choice between the two indefinite articles "a" & "an" is determined by sound. Words beginning with consonant sounds are preceded by "a" and words beginning with vowel sounds are preceded by "an". There are some special cases also. For instance,
* a university, a union, a useful book, etc.
* a one-dollar note, a one-man army, etc.
* an MA, a BA, an LLB, a BSC, etc.
