How often I’ve wished we could meet
face to face,
but
you’d be afraid
or
think your mind played tricks on you.
It’s been lonely for me,
trapped between two worlds,
lo, these many years.
Many tears have I shed
watching life go on without me,
not being part of anything.
I’ve watched your family grow
and I’ve watched when you worried
and prayed for them,
and I wonder, had I a family once?
When you hear a knock or a creak,
do not fear.
It is I,
making myself known to you
in the only way I can.
There is no release for me.
