An Ottava Rima poem for Potlatch Poetry

Why Not Every Day?

by damommy

Are love and charity reserved for holidays
with snow and lights and Santa in the mall,
to stir within our hearts whenever carols play?
We wear these feelings briefly, season’s shawl,
and when that time is done, it’s put away
to wait another year when we recall
it, dust it off, and put it on once more,
and wear it proudly as we did before.

Why can’t we wrap ourselves in this year ‘round
and cloak ourselves with caring and concern?
Yell cheerful greetings out, let them resound
in all directions and from stem to stern
‘til animosity and hatred’s drowned.
Then Earth will have the peace for which we’ve yearned.
One step, one hand, one smile will be a start
to change a mind or melt a bitter heart.
