How I Write My Poetry

by Reese Turner

Now, the challenge which was given me
Is to explain how I write my poetry…
Well, the yearn to write lives within,
But, needs inspiration to begin.

Not being deep or notably smart,
I write of things which touch my heart.
And most often, I must find it funny;
About my age, or life with my honey.

So, when by something I’m inspired,
My rhyme and rhythm get all fired.
I hide away, bang my computer,
To chase a poem like a jilted suiter.

Often, I write - then re-write again,
Thankful it’s not with paper and pen.
A metaphor of wine is relevant here
To keep things flowing in happy cheer.

Insuring lines read smooth, no ripples,
No missing or dangling participles…
Writing truth, no suppositions,
End sentences not in prepositions!

I’d be too remiss if I did not praise
Thesaurus/dictionary apps I gaze
To find the right word or syllable sum
Else the readers would call me “dumb”!

Finally, with points made, rhymes done,
I sit back, re-read, then say, “That’s fun!”
Give it some hours to mellow and rise,
Select a picture for the reader’s eyes…

Final tweaks before I post, hit “enter”,
Hoping some will say, “That’s a winner!”

Writing Poetry contest entry

Once forced to read Beowulf and other stuff that made no sense to me,
I never imagined that someday I would, myself, write silly poetry!
And, wonder of wonders, that I pay cash to join the club "Fanstory"?
In which to write and read poetry and prose? What change in me there be!

P.S. "The poet's eye, in a fine frenzy rolling, doth glance from heaven to Earth, from Earth to heaven; and as imagination bodies forth the forms of things unknown, the poet's pen turns them to shape, and gives to airy nothing a local habitation and a name; such tricks hath strong imagination."
William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
