a 100-word story
Hammered
by Bill Schott
I watched the fight in the church yard as my brother faced off with Malcolm, the town bully.
They were both about fifteen, and similar builds. The difference was that Malcolm was confident he would win, and my brother, I learned later, was sure he was fighting for his life.
My brother was right handed. This should have required him to stand with his right arm angled back, and his left arm forward to jab. He wasn't aware of that; his stance was reversed.
Malcolm wasn't expecting my brother's hammering right hand to rearrange his face in three blows. Victory!
