Needing a Home by Hermit Crab

by HarryT

Outgrown my shell, so exposed, need to find a new home
Crawled along the pebble beach, life killing sun drying me
Chance to see a jogging man; I watch him with intensity
He bent and picked up a shell it looked a perfect fit for me
He gazes out to the vast forming sea, in his hand a hollow
Green speckled shell, a reprieve from the reaper threatening me

He flipped the shell into the air, caught it, put it into his pocket
Began to jog then suddenly stopped, took the shell out
I said, “dear Neptune, please let him drop it on the shore"
He walked about, turned to the sea, cocked his arm
I croaked, “Oh, Mister, please don’t,” but he hurled
My new home into Neptune’s ever undulating sea

Winds swept and seagulls squawked, the echoes warned me
Had to wade into the deep before tides washed my home away
Knew in my anxious heart that shell would be a perfect home for me
Sputtered through flowing tidal lace. Where was that safety shell?
Waded into the sea kingdom, my orange body dipped under water
Searched for the speckled, green shell that he had thrown into the sea
My red eyes scanned the sandy ocean bottom, I prayed, “Oh, Neptune,
Please help me, you know, I must find a new home before it’s too late for me”
