The good old days of summer

Summertime

by Brenda Henderson

Summertime, Summertime

Long fun-filled days; Hot August nights

Carnivals, Fairs and visits to the beach

Candied apples, cotton candy. Funnel cakes and Italian sausages

Cold watermelon with salt

Hot fried and steamed crabs on the patio

Tiny Miller pony beers; so cold ice crystals are floating in the bottle

Drinking from the water hose and water gun/balloon fights

Running from loose neighborhood guard dogs

Eating crab-apples and plums off the neighbors trees

Staying up late and falling asleep in the back of my Dad's pick-up

Dixie cups filled with all flavors of frozen Kool-Aid my Grandma made and sold to us for 25 cents

Lying in the grass cloud watching and blowing dandelions to make wishes

Playing "Hide and Go Seek" and "Red Light Green Light" from one end of the block to the other

Fighting for a seat on the porch swing on Grandma's porch

Playing "My Car Your Car" from the porch as the cars sped by

Packing the car with snacks, games and pillows for a road trip

Playing "My House Your House" on a drive in the country

Hamburgers, french fries & chocolate dipped ice cream cones on Sunday drives

Finding the next clear radio station on the dial driving the interstate

Friday night at the drive-in and Saturday morning at the mall

Visiting different theme parks from "Bush Gardens" to "Disney World"

Berry picking by the quart at the local Strawberry farm

Picnics in the park and barbecues and fish frys in the back yard

Sparklers, fireworks, and catching lightening bugs in a jar

Racing to get home before the street lights came on, curfew

Yeah. Those were the good old days of summer to me!
