Distant Tree

by Mia Twysted

In the distance stands a tree.
It reaches up with hopes and dreams.
Each night it prays to the moon,
But as daylight comes, it stands refused.

Wilting leaves fall to the ground.
Sad and lonely, they turn to brown.
Crisp and brittle they break apart,
Just like this woman's broken heart.

I stand and stare at that tree.
Wondering if it too wants to leave.
To say good-bye to this world,
And all the pain we have endured.

You cannot fix a broken heart.
No tape, no glue will mend its parts.
Because like the leaves on the ground,
It's forever changed, forever scarred.

But as time does, it moves along.
The tree in the distance begins to grow strong.
It grows new leaves and holds them up high.
Reaching again toward the sky.

Different than it was before,
The tree begins to live once more.
A heart that different; a heart that's changed,
Sees the tree and does the same.
