Tethered

by Mary Kay Bonfante

Depression is
like a noose around my neck,
I'm not hanging from it yet.
Will it get me?
I'm not hanging from that noose,
And may never, actually.
But how far can I really go,
With one end of the rope
attached to a tree,
And the other end
attached to me?

Dear Heavenly Father,
Will you cut this binding rope?
I am too weak to untie it myself,
My strength is gone,
The knots are too tight.
Is the rope in my mind alone?

I see tethers everywhere.
I need You, Holy Spirit, Comforter!
Set my spirit free, Lord Jesus,
I have set my hope on You,
My sole Salvation.
Fix my despairing heart,
It's quivering, frightened,
But I hold on tight
To You.

Nothing seems as bad
While I'm wrapped up in your arms,
Oh Father of Lights! Precious Lord!
The power of Your love
will surely set me free
while I'm waiting
and trusting,
patiently.
