City Kid

A Fond Memory

by Boogienights

Childhood Contest Winner
The sixties were tumultuous,
but not for kids like me.
On the Southside of Chicago
we ran barefoot, wild, and free.
On our tenements back porches,
in the alleys, in the park,
we played games that we made up
'till the skies above turned dark.
Then ran when mama called us,
never once felt danger there,
except for when my mama
combed the tangles from my hair.
On the days with burning pavement
the firemen looked away,
as we opened up the "pump"
that cooled us down throughout the day.
We were poor but rich in love,
a close little family.
I wish I could relive those days,
they meant so much to me.

The "pump" was what the neighborhood kids called an opened fire hydrant. The strongest kid would open it up, much to the delight of us sweltering kids. :)
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
