Male lions usually died by the hand of other male lions intent on stealing the pride (a group of females)

The lion in the pic above is C-Boy, he lost his pride after being attacked by three younger males ( called Killers) who wanted his pride.

Miraculously he survived the attack and actually lived to the ripe age of 14 dying of natural causes.. he was loved by the rangers in the Serengeti National Park.
