Not on Speaking Terms

by Mary Furlong

"Tell me something," the music teacher said as I entered the faculty lounge. "What would you do about a neighbor's barking dog?"
Trick question? This guy was a funny duck. Usually, he didn't say a word. Not a morning person, I had figured.
"Call the police?" I ventured.
"You think? Maybe I will."
Giving a nod, he rose and left the room.
The rest of the faculty burst into applause. "You won."
Won what?
"He hasn't spoken to you all year. You never noticed?"
"Why? What did I do to make him mad?"
No one remembered. Did he?

True Story Flash contest entry

I never did find out why he wasn't speaking to me, much less why he thought I was an authority on barking dogs? There must be a lesson here, but if so, I can't remember what it is.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
