Run rabbit, run!

Better Late Than Never

by LisaMay

Right from the start,
you constructed a wall of thorn
to trap my cowering heart
within your scorn.
My wounded self you denied.
When damage was done,
you thought you’d won.
How I cried!

But what’s there to win,
when your harm is a sin?
When love is demanded
you’ll stay empty-handed.

Under your thumb, I was numb.
Watched like a hawk,
beneath your shadow I froze.
You blocked my sun.
Behind closed doors, who knows?
I shrank within — a timid rabbit
in camouflaged habit.
Cruelty’s spreading black stain
became spread-eagled pain.

But what did you gain,
and what’s there to win,
when your harm is a sin?
When love is demanded
you’ll stay empty-handed.

Out of harm’s way,
freedom will win the day,
when strength is found to renew.
Under skies of blue,
I sought the sun and the Father, too.

I made a pledge and it came to pass
there was greener grass
on the other side of the hedge.

There’s much to win
now I’ve fled from sin,
and a life of bright love can begin.

Clear reason and rhyme
will help us chime.
I live in accord and I can afford
to risk my open heart,
secure it won’t break apart.
I can safely record
my hand’s in His hand for a rosy start.

No longer demanded,
my love has expanded.
