Play Like

by Willie P. Smith

I was watching a little girl and boy
Hard at play one day.
I listened to them talking,
And heard the little girl say.

"Play like I'm the mommy,
And you will be the dad.
Pretend I treat you nicely
And you treat me bad.

Play like you stay out drinking
And spend your hard earned pay.
I stay home working,
Keeping your house all day.

Play like you start shouting,
Calling me all kind of names.
I'll start crying and warn you,
I'm tired of your hurtful games.

I'll say, I know you've been cheating
Of that I have no doubt.
You say you don't love me,
You're glad I finally found out."

I continued to listen to them talking,
Her last words were shaky and sad.
"Now I'm just like my mommy,
And you sound just like my dad."

When I left, they were still playing.
I wondered as I walked away.
Would mommy and daddy act so,
If they knew their children hurt that way?

Too many children hurt when their parents fight, especially when in front of them.
