ANZAC poem

Like Poppies

by Chrissy710

           Like Poppies

The poppies stand alone in Flanders Fields
As we today now stand in isolation.
But raise our candles high with fond rem'brance
Salute our fallen hero's as a nation.

In driveways at the crack of dawn we'll stand
This year will be unique, quite like no other.
However as we hear the bugle's sound
Last post; in driveways we will stand together.

Through spirits of our ANZACs we unite
And strengthen our resolve to forge ahead.
But this year ask them for their guiding light
To help beat this new enemy instead.

Unseen with stealth has crept across our lands
Our fight has really only just begun.
But from our ANZAC legacy we'll draw
New strength and hope united now as one.

In Australia it is the 25th April and each year on this date we celebrate ANZAC day to commemorate the soldiers from the 'Australian and New Zealand Army Corps' who fought in the 1st world war particularly the battle fought at Gallipoli in Turkey on this date in 1915. It was a battle where many men lost their lives from both sides.

ANZAC day was first acknowledged in 1916 and in Australia and New Zealand in particular this is one of the most revered days of the year.
Usually marked with dawn services at 6am in many places throughout our countries.
ANZAC day has become larger every year and most people observe this date

This year due to the Corona lockdown in place there will be no public gatherings so we have been asked to stand in our driveways at 6am to acknowledge this event

I wrote this poem (I usually write one every year) to acknowledge not only the ANZAC spirit but also to ask the ANZAC's for their help to fight against this virus which has come upon us all.

Thank you for reading my work

Thank you suzannethompson2 for the lovely poppies Remembrance
