Watch out for the waves

A sad place

by Gail Denham

Ernie insisted we come to the shore. "Deal with grief, Grace" Colette's memory was raw. Sand was hot. Would wade, but waves threatened.

"Lose that mournful face," Ernie said. "No one blames you."

Felt like screaming. Wanted to fasten a crab to his nose. I'd let Colette off her leash. She was so good. A sneak wave caught her.

I allowed waves to cool my legs. "Could we get another pup? Promise I'll be careful."

Ernie hugged me. "We'll see."
