Ode Poem Contest Entry

The Last Responders

by DragonSkulls

Suspect in critical condition after exchanging gunfire with ...

This is an ode to the last responders
who few appreciate.
Through circumstances uncontrolled
they may have shown up late.

The first responders get the praise
for they weren't caught by lights
or traffic that won't move aside
or slow construction sites.

The last responder's vehicle
had tires low on air.
Perhaps one blew while on their way
then found out there's no spare.

The last responder's GPS
quit working while in route.
By the time they reached the fire
the first ones had it out.

The last responder's ambulance
was never filled with gas.
At the pump they shake their head
as first responders pass.

Is it fate or just bad luck?
Who knows the reason why?
The first responders mock the last,
"Hey, thanks for stopping by."

The first responders get the cheers.
The press is smokin' hot.
The last responders stand alone
and don't get crappin' squat.

My ode today's for those unseen
who missed the main event.
To last responders everywhere,
at least we know you went.
