Answers, Grandpa Gustav

by Gail Denham

He was a charmer, was Grandpa Gustav. Had
the most vibrant, frisky eyes in the wedding photo
that hangs on my wall. A handsome dude, he talked
Grandma Ida into running off to be married.
Three children soon followed.

Both of them, Grandpa Gustav and Grandma Ida
were off the boats as infants, fresh from Finland.
They grew up, stubborn and determined.

I think I'd have liked Grandpa Gustav. I fancy my
eccentric bent, yearning for solitude, and quirky ways
sprang straight from him and Grandma Ida,
not skipping my mother; she of the tight little chin,
thrust out, that never failed to predict a storm brewing.

As I look into Grandpa Gustav's piercing eyes, standing
stoic, proud, unsmiling, by Grandma Ida's shoulder,
I say: "I'd like answers to your life? How about your
parents? Who were they? Why and how did you leave
Grandma Ida and my mother?" Grandpa Gustav
died young, at 35, so I never knew him.

Somehow I feel I know him. Wish I could have
met him. He's part of who I am and I'm so glad.

Look at some old photographs and write about a memory or a thought that they give you. If possible (not required) include the image in your poem.

Thanks to Anne for the image of "connection" - I've always had questions for my Grandpa Gustav - who I never met. He died when my mom was about 5 years old. Would have liked to meet him.
I have their wedding picture on the wall.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
