The life of a....citizen.

Then and Now

by Rosemary Everson1

Then, embracing the summer
as it lies before thou
Time to spread the arms
that are in front of me now

Now, retiree but not from life
  when gone, what will remain
Feeling giddy as summer air
passes through aches and pains

Then, feeling the grains of black dirt
sifting through my hands
Finding worms to go fishing
pulling line from the sand

Now, digging in soil, planting seeds
fixing trellises for existing flowers
Magic growth in brown soil
loving sun's warmth, a rain shower

Then, lying on my backside enjoying
green grass and trodden earth
Clouds visible to ducks, whales
sailing ships, counting their worth

Now, quietly watching busy beehives
at dusk, worker bees fly home
Delivering their bags of pollen
discovering nectar, their honeycomb

Then, sunset's colors of blazing red
and orange yellow goodbyes
Seeing tomorrow when the sunrise
ascends upward in the sky

Now, circling the blossoming tree
soon-to-be fresh apples
Climbing ladder, reaching for fruit
squeezing juice for drink, Snapple
