Call To War

by Xia Thornwood

March red into the battlefield!
Drown all fear and murder pride
With only prayer and courage for a shield!

The warrior boys, wounds yet unhealed,
With arms in slings to bodies tied,
March red into the battlefield.

Gray men whose close end time has sealed
Still bent and crooked on the charger ride,
With only prayer and courage for a shield.

Men who heard their death bell pealed,
Broke their chains, and scorned to hide,
March red into the battlefield.

Women choosing blades to wield
In fell abandon war have tried,
With only prayer and courage for a shield.

So must you, with beating heart and liver steeled,
Though thousands fall upon each side,
March red into the battlefield,
With only prayer and courage for a shield.
