New Day Same Battle

by L. R. Jensen

A sunlight blade sliced his face. Greg opened his eyes, waited for the world to come back like a wrecking ball. He willed his body to move, his arms reaching, fingers grasping, toppling a flask.

His skin was hot and tight. A straight jacket of flesh. He needed a drink. 10:13 a.m. Liz was at work. Is it too early for a beer?

Sweating now, every breath a choking hazard, he wandered downstairs.

At 10:20 a.m. Greg faced his friend, his foe, his fridge. “I don’t need this,” he told himself. He reached for the bottle.
