A 100-Word Flash Fiction

Because I Love Them...

by Y. M. Roger

The diagnosis was like lightning:  one moment, chest pains when eating, and the next? Cancer.

My days are filled with pain either during the chemo treatments or the debilitating side-effects from them. No motorcycle and no beer. God, I miss the fun and freedom!

Our youngest just graduated. The other three are married. They call daily to check on ‘Dad’ – trying not to cry. But I hear their tears.

My wife never leaves. She smiles, though her exhaustion shows.

I’m holding on for all of them when really? I’m just ready to let go.

I am a prisoner of life.
