My Long-distance Valentine

by Gail Denham

He was far away, across the sea,
in army fatigues, serving our country.
My bestest friend happened to be
his cousin, so I had tales of how he

slept with one of his knees in the air.
It seemed to her, he had little care.
So I wrote a note to this soldier guy.
He wrote right back, I don't know why.

His letters were fun, quite big on the humor.
My friends drew near when there was a rumor
that I had a letter from this winsome fellow,
who made them laugh, oft brought a bellow.

"Please, read it out loud, so we can giggle."
Still, no sweet talk to make my heart squiggle.
He wrote that he worked high up on a hill,
while far below, fields spread like green spill.

But then came the day he appeared at my door.
Now, need I tell you very much more?
In days I knew this man was for real,
and within months we'd sealed the deal.

My mom did voice her slight concern
Was this too fast? Did she discern
a problem with my quick decision?
We're wed 60 years, by God's grace, no revision.

Thanks to MKFlood for the appropriate artwork. His letters were funny and interesting. We had our ups and downs, for sure - but I'm thankful to God for this man.
