Hermit Crab

by LisaMay

My shell is beginning to crack.
Still, I cower in dark recesses,
locked in this castle of sand.

The spiral staircase to the stars
is blocked by the turret’s trapdoor,
but I feel the warmth of the sun.

Day and night, night and day,
eventually the time is right.
I have outgrown my insecurities.

Tentatively, I nudge –
then pushing, pushing,
I break the lock’s encrusted rust.

Standing on the battlements,
I wave my tattered flag.
The sky absorbs my gritty shout.

The sea absorbs my whispered hopes.
In the faded blur of beyond,
I join the hum to find a better fit.
