An Inverted Refrain

Devotion

by June Sargent

Pressed between the leaves of a book
A rose, token of devotion
Preserved so she can always look
To feel again the emotion
      Preserved token of devotion
      Emotion pressed between a book

Sweet memories of a young girl
Herself a tender pink rosebud
Soft petals waiting to unfurl
 feelings that could easily flood
      Memories of a young rosebud
      With feelings waiting to unfurl

A reminder of their first kiss
'Neath the flowering cherry tree
A night of innocence and bliss
When life was ever so carefree
Her first kiss 'neath the cherry tree
When life was innocence and bliss

And now she thinks of him often
Has it been all that many years
Since they laid him in his coffin
Just too tired to count all the tears
Lost count of all the tears and years
Since they laid him in that coffin
