Orange Marmalade

When I was young, mom would drop
two pieces of Wonder Bread into the
toaster, I waited anxiously to hear the pop

Two glass jars were already on the table
one label read Smucker’s Strawberry Jelly,
which my brother favored, the other
my favorite the sweet-sour flavor of
Crosse and Blackwell Orange Marmalade

Never Smucker’s Strawberry Jelly for me
the seeds stuck between my teeth and gums

When Mom placed the toasted Wonder Bread
slices in front of me, I sang to myself,
“Orange marmalade for me, loved
those little strips of sweet-sour orange zest
orange marmalade you’re simply the best.”

Then generously buttered the slices
all the way to the ends and screwed off
my marmalade’s lid, dipped a spoon
filling it with brimming orange goodness, and
slather it all the way across toasted Wonder Bread

With watering mouth, chomped a big bite
smiled as the tasteful pleasure of toasted bread
and orange marmalade oozed about my mouth
it was the greatest of morning pleasure

Even today at my superannuated age
in the morning Crosse and Blackwell
Orange Marmalade slathered on
buttered toast is still treasure as a
breakfast gastronomic delight
