Our Returning Hero

by Sugarray77

The tarmac sizzled in the hot June sun,
and waiting in the shade, I held my breath.
I kissed our nine-month-old, our first-born son,
and gladly spurned dark thoughts of war and death.
Each moment seemed to creep on sloth-like feet,
as military ways are known to do.
His duty in Iraq was now complete,
returning to us now the war was through.
But, as I saw the soldiers on the ramp,
I found warm tears were running down my cheek.
My clothing and our infant were quite damp,
as I ran to him, too choked up to speak.
He gathered us into a warm embrace,
and seemed to be devouring my face.
