A Boy and His Dog in Their Final Moments

A Faithful Death

by Xia Thornwood

The boy dragged himself across the gouged and trampled snow, past the carcass of the wildcat, to the smaller black and white body a few feet beyond.

The dog weakly twitched her tail as the child lay down beside her.
"We'll just rest a bit."

In dawn's gray light, the searchers found the three bodies. The dog lay curled upon the child's chest, having futilely tried to warm him with her own fast-fading life heat.
