Lost In The Snow
Turned Around
by country ranch writer
"How could this have happened?" Casey muttered to himself. Casey has always been able to amble his way through any snow storm till now. When he left the ranch this morning there was no sign of snow anywhere. Gathering the horses he headed home only to run into the worst snow storm in history. The snow flakes started getting thicker and thicker. The snow was getting deeper as he rode on trying to get ahead of the storm.
Dark clouds loomed above him, there was no sign of the sun to guide him home. Taking his scarf he wrapped it around his hat to cover his ears and mouth. Talking encouragement to his horses he continued on hoping he was going in the right direction.
While riding he thought back to the time this family came to the valley. All they had was a herd of horses and no home. Casey helped his dad build a cabin for him,his mom, dad it was quite an adventure!
Today they had more than a hundred acres and to many horses to count.
He was heading down a canyon but was he really headed in the right direction? Sitting in his saddle he glanced around ever where he looked it was all covered in white snow. The pine covered slopes all looked the same. Casey had no way of knowing how many miles they had traveled when he stopped to rest the horses only for a minute.
"I'm lost," Casey said,"I am really lost!" Let's go guys or we will freeze to death he told the horses.Stomping their feet and shaking there heads they continued on as if agreeing with him. The snow drifts now we're getting higher.
Casey thought of his mom baking cookies, cakes , and pies for Christmas. The turkey was already thawed and in the fridge waiting to be stuffed with his moms favorite home made stuffing. There would be mashed potatoes, turkey gravy, sweet potatoes, and Aunt Jenny's famous green been casserole.Corn on the cob will be brought by Uncle Buck. Just thinking about it made his stomach growl. It reminded him he hadn't eaten in a long time.
Suddenly Casey heard a sound, stopped and listened he thought he heard movement. He was right Casey began to see a something coming his way through the snow. Struggling to seewhat was coming his way his vision was hampered.
Suddenly his ears picked up barking! Could it be his husky snow coming to find him? It was a miracle! His husky was barking, yipping, jumping up and down, he was so happy to see Casey. So much so he jumped up onto Caseys horse to greet him. Snow was kissing him all over. Casey was laughing and crying with happiness. He said,"to the husky show me the way home," Snow jumped down and started running towards home as fast he could with Casey and the horses right behind him.
As he entered the corral with the horses his father ran out to help him feed the horses and break the ice on the water trough so the horses could drink. Snow followed them into the house and took his rightful spot in front of the fire to get warm. Mom set a heaping plate of food. Coffee, biscuits on the table for him. she looked at him in the eye and said, "now son what happened to keep you out so late?" He looked to his mom and dad, he was to embarrassed to tell them he got lost. His dad said" it doesn't matter why, just that he is home safe and sound!"
