A Lakeside Meditation

by LisaMay

While walking one day by the old gold-rush town,
musing on memories of labour and luck,
I chanced upon a pretty pool, and tarried awhile.

Amidst the tawny glints of autumn, I lingered
to ponder all that passes is left as flickering motes
of dust upon a tawdry past.

In luminous display, the lakeside was lavish,
circled with autumn larches in rust and tarnished gold,
their vertical murmurings a-sway.

A warm breeze tugged, playfully plucking
the harp strings of bending branches.
Leaves shivered in the golden hour’s glow of last light.

My meandering meditation was mirrored in the pool:
gently rippling bars of colour blended,
merged, became calm – perfected.

I picked up a pebble and found no nugget of value.
Fool’s gold, I flung it – plop!
Yellowed at the edges, my reflection was broken.
